During the pandemic, small businesses in Vietnam struggled to transition online. Existing e-commerce platforms lacked a focus on handcrafted and customized products. Sellers faced issues with customer engagement, pricing, and logistics.

Why It Matters?
Why It Matters?

Traditional funeral practices significantly impact the environment. They often involve toxic embalming fluids, non-biodegradable materials, and permanent land use that disrupt ecosystems and ultimately contribute to climate change. At the same time, end-of-life planning is often avoided, leaving many families stressed and unprepared. A lack of awareness about sustainable options and unclear guidance leads to impersonal funerals that not only fail to honor the values of the deceased but also harm the environment.

There is a clear need for accessible, personalized tools that simplify planning, address financial barriers, and provide holistic support, ensuring that the end-of-life journey is thoughtful, meaningful, and aligned with individual values.

Challenge

Challenge
Challenge

End-of-life planning is deeply personal, often avoided and shaped by grief, cultural traditions, and complex family dynamics. The challenge is to balance emotional sensitivity with clear, practical guidance. The toolkit must gently introduce sustainable funeral options, while remaining accessible across generations and planning styles. It should invite reflection, support meaningful choices, and turning a difficult topic into a thoughtful experience.

After conducting in-depth user research and exploring various design concepts, we realized that creating new eco-friendly funeral methods wasn’t necessary, as these options already exist. Instead, we decided to focus on:

  • Bus Tour: A visit to the Conservatory Forest, where users can enjoy a relaxing tour in nature, engage with a Death Doula at the Visitor Center, learn about human compost soil in growing the forest, and share reflections on end-of-life planning with others.

  • Guidebook: A resource to help individuals explore sustainable funeral options and create detailed plans for their families to follow.

  • Legacy Book: A reflective tool encouraging people to consider the deeper meaning of their choices and the legacy they wish to leave behind.

These tests revealed valuable insights we hadn’t identified in our initial research and ideation:

  • Tradition Requires Sensitivity: Funerals are deeply rooted in tradition. Simply providing the benefits of sustainable options alone isn’t enough to persuade users—a gradual, sensitive approach is essential.

  • Generational Differences: Younger users tend to avoid thinking about end-of-life planning unless necessary, while older users are concerned about their family’s feelings and struggle to discuss the topic without causing worry.

  • A Personal Journey: End-of-life planning is reflective and deeply personal. Older users prioritize their legacy, while families value ceremonies and keepsakes that honor loved ones and support grieving.

  • Breaking the Ice: Starting conversations about end-of-life planning is challenging. To address this, we added the brochure and the card deck as an accessible entry point to ease users into the topic.

Our card deck is designed to spark meaningful conversations about life and death with loved ones. By guiding users through these stages, the card deck encourages reflection and opens the door to meaningful, approachable discussions about end-of-life planning.

The guidebook is the heart of our design—it's the final step in our thoughtful approach to sustainable end-of-life planning. It’s divided into three easy-to-follow chapters: Learn, Reflect, and Decide.

  • Chap.1 - Learn introduces the environmental impact of traditional funerals through interactive questions and offers greener alternatives. It also includes a helpful chart comparing eco-friendly providers in Washington State.

  • Chap.2 - Reflect helps users think about their life story, values, and the legacy they want to leave, using thoughtful prompts to explore memories, relationships, and what matters most.

  • Chap.3 - Decide supports users in making and sharing their end-of-life plans. It includes practical tools for talking with family, documenting wishes, and working with providers.

I really enjoyed this project. The fast pace challenged us to think quickly, follow the full design process, and imagine how the product could grow over time. Working as a team taught us a lot about communication, compromise, and trust.

We also learned how to design for sensitive topics like end-of-life planning—not just sharing info, but supporting an emotional, personal journey. Using new formats like a card deck and guidebook pushed us out of our comfort zones. The card deck helped break down a tough topic into smaller, interactive steps for family conversations, while the book offered a slower, more reflective experience. Both formats were especially well-suited for older users making important decisions.

Overall, this project helped us grow as more thoughtful and empathetic designers.
